R-Value vs Emissivity

"R-ratings are for the 20th century, Emissivity is 21st century!"

The effectiveness of most insulation materials used in residential and commercial building today assume “heat loading” to be a fact of life. R-Value is directly associated with the measurement of the rate at which heat is transferred. To measure R-Value then, heat transfer from warm to cold requires that heat be loaded into the material (in this case insulation) for it to be transferred to the cold side.

Wouldn't the world be a better place if we could prevent heat loading before it happens? Why slow the rate of heat transfer into or out of a building if you can prevent it in the first place? On Bob Vila's website we read, “It is a change in the way we think about insulating our homes against energy lost. R-rating is for the 20th century, emissivity is 21st century!”

You may be surprised to find out that you really have understood the term longer than just for the last two minutes! Low-E windows (read highly efficient windows, you know.. those real expensive ones!) have to do with low emissivity, not low efficiency! Low-E windows block UV, heat, and more from going through a window. With Thermo-Shield®, the principle is the same, just the material is different!

Rejecting radiant energy is what emissivity is really all about. If we can stop heat loading before it begins, then R-Values become irrelevant! To make things just a little more complicated, conventional fiberglass insulation manufacturers won't tell you that, if the same fiberglass insulation carries 2% humidity, it's effectiveness is cut by 50%! an R-30 roof can quickly degrade to R-15 or less, depending on how much humidity the insulation has absorbed. "Fiberglass insulation is tested and rated at 73 degrees Fahrenheit which is the ideal temperature for fiberglass, says Pritchett. Under harsher conditions", he suggests that fiberglass doesn't perform as well as it's ratings predict!

'We have raised rabbits for the past six years and heat inside the hutches has always been a problem. We applied Thermo-Shield® to the hutches and within fifteen minutes the inside temperature dropped from 102 to 74 degrees F. Needless to say, we are impressed.' Marilyn C., Denver, Colorado

Using both an Interior Thermo-Shield® Exterior Thermo-Shield® Ceramic Coating gives the insulation the best of both worlds! Thermo-Shield's variable permeability allows a water tight membrane to protect the substrate from absorbing more humidity. Yet, when dry, Thermo-Shield® products allow existing water vapors to pass through to the dry (outside) side of the wall. Over time, the humidity in the fiberglass insulation is removed. This allows an even more effective insulation barrier between hot and cold temperatures, inside and out. It doesn't matter if we're speaking of Summer or Winter. Seasons don't matter. The principle is the same! Using Thermo-Shield® products can save up to 40% on your energy bill. Maybe more!

Thermo-Shield® Ceramic Roof Coatings work the same! All Thermo-Shield® products are also fire resistant and mold resistant. Washability is also a feature, not an option! Want to wash it? Use what you like! Usually a garden hose works just fine. If not, go get the pressure washer. Thermo-Shield® won't disappoint!
