Energy Savings – Active or Passive?

Energy savings are becoming more urgent year after year. The majority of homes in America are heated by natural gas in winter, while electricity demand spikes during the summer, driven by air-conditioners. Energy costs are going up every season, but an energy hungry nation wants more. The nostalgic past is gone..usher in the outrageous. More comfort, more house, more car, more life! Our track record is appalling. We need to look at energy savings much more seriously!

Across the globe, other countries have become much more energy efficiency minded, because energy costs have long been higher than in the United States. What are our options? Is the answer replacing light bulb and appliances with ones which require less energy? There's a commercial on television that proposes that, if all households in America would replace one incandescent light bulb with an energy efficient bulb, America would save enough power to supply the energy needs for the entire State of Arizona for one year! How innovative! We have to start somewhere, don't we! Most houses have just one light bulb, no? Absolute rubbish! Identify?

Energy Savings Defines Conservation

Are consumption and conservation exact opposites? No! When we give it some serious thought, in this energy savings context, wouldn't consumption and preservation be more correct antonyms? May we propose that conservation is actually more an environmentally responsible and informed decision. Is this a significant difference, or are we splitting hairs? Neither domestic or international programs will cause conservation and have every household identify with energy saving guidelines voluntarily!

Conservation must become personal. Either a decision to save money or a decision of principle. The general public will conserve more, not because of a National Energy Star program, but rather because of the significant increase in the prices of various types of energy because of supply and demand.

We have to search beyond traditional methods of energy savings, pro-actively building community around lifestyle quality choices. Let us search for options, discuss ideas and plan together to consciously choose ways to produce a future where energy savings of today fuel the desires we have tomorrow.

There's passive conservation like using renewable energy (ethanol) to “conserve” the amount of fossil fuels we use, high efficiency windows or technologies like pink or yellow insulation for roof, attic walls and much more. Those aren't lifestyle choices either. Many of those decisions have been legislated. “Tongue-in-cheek” aside, we've got to do better!

There's active conservation; energy management that can be as simple as the installation of motion sensitive light switches, or a time control thermostat that knows about your comings and goings. Devices like this might have us thinking that we're created conserving energy for today and tomorrow, but is it really conservation? Have gadgets become a replacement for our environmental conscience?
